Fitting The "Rocks" Into My Day

This last week I read two post that had me thinking and examining my priorities. The first post was over at The Stay-at-Home Missionary a blog that I enjoy reading regularly. Joy wrote about Taking time for the important things, spending quality time with our children. It is a beautiful post about the importance of making special time with our children. Oh, how important this is!

The second post was referenced in the Taking time post. This post was at Holy Experience on How to get important stuff in a day. Where Ann writes about our "jars" (representing the time we are all given in a day) that we fill with "rocks" (the important big stuff: time with the Lord, time with our children, etc.) and gritty daily stuff (things like laundry, cleaning, etc.).

After reading these posts I wanted to make sure that the rocks in my life were getting first priority in each of my days. So I started my week examining what I do and what I was giving first priority. I realized that too many of my days are run by the "gritty". The laundry, dishes, food prep, all of these things are important and need to be done, but my days should not be run by them. So much of the important things were not getting first priority. I do fit some "rocks" into my days, but they were not getting the priority they deserve.

As the week went on and my priorities and thinking began to change, I was pleasantly pleased to see that I was still able to fit in and have time for all the "gritty" things in my day. This slight change of thinking has made such a difference in how I look at my days and in what I foucus on.
Some of the things that I want to start looking at differently are:
  • Putting more time, effort and planning into activities and time spent with my children.
  • Making sure to treasure each and every moment I have with those I love.
  • Making more of an effort to get them involved in the gritty things, turning these gritty tasks of our day into time together.
  • This last one was one of my goals last year but I always want to stay focused on it and that is making my time with the Lord my first priority.
  • Planning and meeting the needs of my husband; being his helpmate and support.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23&24

Please take a few minutes to read these two beautiful posts, as both of these ladies say it much better then I could recap here. You can read their posts here and here
