Feather Pens

A few weeks ago we learned about the making and signing of the Constitution. With this study the girls were able to try their own hand at making ink and trying to write with a feather pen. We had a fun time!

First we had to smash our blue berries.
Then we strained out the juice.

Mixed in some vinegar and salt.

The the girls got to try their hand at writing with a feather pen.

While doing this exercise we were amazed at how hard it is to write with a feather pen. Our feathers were quite small and bigger feathers would have been a help, nonetheless it is not an easy task. This experience gave us all a better appreciation for Thomas Jefferson and the beautiful job he did when writing the Constitution with his feather pen!
